"Quando eu falo da aspiração em relação à bela, do ideal como o objetivo final da arte, que cresce de um anseio por esse ideal, eu não sou por um momento sugerindo que a arte deve evitar a 'sujeira' do mundo. Pelo contrário! A imagem artística é sempre um metônimo, onde uma coisa é substituída por outra, menor para maior. Para contar o que é viver, o artista usa algo morto; falar do infinito, ele mostra o finito. Substituição ... O infinito não pode ser feito em matéria, mas é possível criar uma ilusão do infinito: a imagem."

When I speak of the aspiration towards the beautiful, of the ideal as the ultimate aim of art, which grows from a yearning for that ideal, I am not for a moment suggesting that art should shun the 'dirt' of the world.
