"Se um ser sofre, não pode haver justificativa moral para se recusar a tomar o sofrimento em consideração. Não importa qual a natureza do ser, o princípio da igualdade exige que seu sofrimento seja contado igualmente com o sofrimento semelhante - na medida em que comparações ásperas podem ser feitas - de qualquer outro ser. Assim, o limite de sitience é o único limite de preocupação defensível com os interesses dos outros. Para marcar esse limite por alguma outra característica como a inteligência ou a racionalidade seria marquê-la de maneira arbitrária. Por que não escolher alguma outra característica, como a cor da pele?"

If a being suffers there can be no moral justification for refusing to take that suffering into consideration. No matter what the nature of the being, the principle of equality requires that its suffering be counted equally with the like suffering - insofar as rough comparisons can be made - of any other being. So the limit of sentience is the only defensible boundary of concern for the interests of others. To mark this boundary by some other characteristic like intelligence or rationality would be to mark it in an arbitrary manner. Why not choose some other characteristic, like skin color?
