"Uma pessoa que sofre amargamente quando leve ou insultada deve reconhecer com isso que ele ainda abriga a antiga serpente em seu peito. Se ele suporta silenciosamente o insulto ou responde com grande humildade, ele enfraquece a serpente e diminui sua espera. Mas se ele responder acrimoniosamente ou descaradamente, ele dá força para derramar seu veneno em seu coração e se alimentar impiedosamente em suas entranhas. Desta forma, a serpente se torna cada vez mais poderosa; Destrói a força de sua alma e suas tentativas de se colocar direito, atraí-lo a viver pelo pecado e estar completamente morto para a justiça."

A person who suffers bitterly when slighted or insulted should recognize from this that he still harbors the ancient serpent in his breast. If he quietly endures the insult or responds with great humility, he weakens the serpent and lessens its hold. But if he replies acrimoniously or brazenly, he gives it strength to pour its venom into his heart and to feed mercilessly on his guts. In this way the serpent becomes increasingly powerful; it destroys his soul's strength and his attempts to set himself right, compelling him to live for sin and to be completely dead to righteousness.
